There is plenty for you and your four-legged companions to explore in this 900-year-old, medieval fortress. Located in the North York Moors National Park, The Helmsley Castle has transformed from a luxurious Tudor mansion into the glorious castle we see today. This is an ideal location for you and your furry friends to adventure while enjoying some well-deserved fresh air.
Lord Helmesley Walter Espec – otherwise known as ‘Walter the Woodpecker’ built he first castle at Helmsley in the early twelfth century. This ambitious military and judicial figure also founded the Rievaulx Abbey and Kirkham Priory.
Through the years, the living quarters and mansion were modernised by the Manners family, however the castle was largely affected by the Civil War. This involved a three-month siege before the Great Keep suffered devastating explosion, leaving it in ruins.
More recently, the Castle has been given the TLC it truly deserves. English Heritage has now made the establishment more accessible to a wide range of visitors – local and tourists alike. The brand-new visitors centre makes it easy to learn more about the castle’s fascinating history.
