What’s happening? Railway in Wartime
Date: 14 October 2017 – 15 October 2017
Where? The North Yorkshire Moors Railway
The sound of drums and marching bands will fill the air at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on the 14 and 15 October as York celebrates with military and civilian vehicle parades. A Pickering in Business collaboration reviewed last year’s parade and we are proud to announce that 2017 is set to deliver a much bigger and better event for all to enjoy.
Everyone is getting on board
There truly is something for the whole family. During the course of the event, families can enjoy steam and heritage diesel train rides. Step back in time and relive the exhilaration and camaraderie shared during World War II.
The weekend event will consist of a foot parade led by the Yorkshire Corps of Drums. This will include all military disciplines, followed by a large display of 1940s military vehicles.
Families can look forward to hopping on board steam and heritage diesel trains. At each station along the journey, a spectacular display of wartime vehicles will be staged on the platforms. Families will also enjoy a variety of performances at each station. These will include a wartime street, ‘The Sidings’, at Pickering, Home Guard demonstrations at Goathland, and an RAF-themed Grosmont, with a replica mk9 Spitfire.
As the legendary train chugs along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, you will eventually arrive at Levisham. This iconic civil parish in the Ryedale district will once again be transformed into a German-occupied French village with re-enactment displays and Café Allée du Bois.
